Comment on “Nutritional status of patients submitted to transplantation of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells: a retrospective study”☆

چکیده
Adult patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) vary widely in terms of their requirement for nutrition intervention and assessment of nutrient needs. Multiple factors throughout the HCT process impact nutritional status and the need for nutrition intervention such as type of conditioning regimen, degree of regimen-related toxicity, infection and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). As demonstrated in the study by Ferreira et al. entitled “Nutritional status of patients submitted to transplantation of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells: a retrospective study”, nutrition status is adversely affected early post-HCT by highdose conditioning regimens requiring hospitalization and parenteral nutrition (PN) support.1 However, regardless of the patient’s early post-HCT toxicities, their nutrition status can also be drastically affected by later complications such as acute/chronic GVHD and/or cytomegalovirus (CMV) enteritis. Long-term complications resulting from immunosuppressive medications such as steroid-induced diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, hyperlipidemia and metabolic syndrome can also affect nutrition status for months to years after HCT.

Nutritional status of patients submitted to transplantation of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells: a retrospective study
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to describe and compare the nutritional status of adult patients submitted to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at two different time points (admission and discharge). METHODS A retrospective, descriptive and quantitative study was performed based on clinical, laboratory and nutritional data obtained from medical records of adult patients of both ge...
متن کاملAssessment of Cyclosporine Serum Concentrations on the Incidence of Acute Graft versus Host Disease Post Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment option for hematological disorders. Cyclosporine (CsA) is one of the major immunosuppressive agents for the prophylaxis against graft versus host disease (GvHD). In this retrospective study, we evaluated the effects of CsA serum levels on the incidence of acute GvHD and transplant outcomes. 103 adult patients rece...

BACKGROUND The development of nutrition care programs for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is necessity in view of the rapid and aggressive consequences frequently seen with this procedure. Patients require constant care to reduce complications and to contribute to the success of therapy. METHODS In an attempt to ascertain the impact of systematic nutritional care o...

Background : Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is among major complications of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells transplantation, and also is an important factor affecting the outcome of transplantation. An increased incidence of GVHD has been suggested following allogeneic peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) transplantation, however, how this affects survival is not yet well clear. In this stu...

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) is an established form of treatment for many patients with severe disorders of the hematopoietic system. Although it is still associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, the results of alloHSCT have improved considerably over the last decades due to a better understanding of stem cell biology, the development of molecular te...
